56 Leonard Street is a 796ft (243m) tall skyscraper under
construction (on hold) in New York City, New York. It is designed by the
Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron and will be located on Leonard Street
(Manhattan) in Tribeca and have 58 floors. The building is described by the
architects as "houses stacked in the sky." In January 2009,
skyscraperpage.com has noted that construction of the building has been
suspended, due to financial problems. 56 Leonard Street is a new skyscraper going up in New York City designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Situated in posh Tribeca, the tower cuts an odd silhouette with its jagged edges and apartments that seem to jut out at all angles. Don't you feel like you could just poke your finger against one and knock it through? As another artsy touch, it's seemingly supported by a silver blob-of-a-sculpture tucked under one of its corners (as seen in the first picture of the gallery below). The tower will stand 56 stories tall, house 145 residential units featuring apartments and luxury penthouses (ranging from a whopping $3.5 million to whoppier $33 million), and construction was scheduled to be completed by 2010. 56 Leonard Street, a 56-storey residential condominium building in New York designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron. The tower will house 145 luxury residences, each with its own unique floor plan and private outdoor space. The typical floors are shifted at the base and top of the tower to create large terraces for the higher-priced costing units. Balconies are used for the floors in between, blending indoors and outdoors seamlessly together. The building's defining corner will be the site of a specially commissioned sculpture by Anish Kapoor. Homes in the building will range from 1,430 square feet to 6,380 square feet, ranging from $3.5 million to $33 million. The construction is supposed to be completed by end of 2010. |

Can it be true that 56 Leonard Street is being put on ice?
The uber-luxe 57-story Tribeca condo project from Herzog & de Meuron opened
a schnazzy show room this fall. By mid-November the foundation had been
poured. But now the word from the construction gang at the very busy and
newly-glassed New York Law School Library project going up next door at 40
Leonard Street is that the fantastical stack of glassy condos, while not yet
dead, has been "shut down," and that the project will not be revived until
either "March 2009" or "sometime in 2010." Further confirmation of the
near-death notice comes from a little bird over at StreetEasy. There the
song is somewhat sadder, claiming that KSW, a mechanical services company
out of Long Island City, has been "directed not to perform any further work
on the 56 Leonard Street Project ... they had been notified by the owner
that the Project has been placed on hold." And what about equally flashy Five Franklin Place nearby? >> The nasty winter doldrums might be infecting other nearby sites as well. Around the corner from 56 Leonard, along an old cobbled lane, the work at "downshifted" Five Franklin Place seems to have frozen at the 2nd Floor, which went up around the beginning of November. Since then the bendy Ben van Berkel site has seen nothing but quiet. Neither Five Franklin nor 56 Leonard seems to be ready for reading of the last rites. And it's in the spirit of the season to be hopeful. We can only wonder which of these two projects will be the first to be revived.
