Built in 1751, this historic building has been restored
to its original splendor as a colonial mansion. The John Banister is
located one block from Banister Wharf on Newport Harbour and is part of
the Historical Hill. It is furnished with period furniture and 18th
Century art work collected from Newport estates and by Captain John
Banister on his numerous trading expeditions to India and the Far East.
The Mansion is now a hotel with rooms, suites, and apartments, some with views of the harbour and Historical Hill. Each bedroom has a working fireplace. This Mansion was also the headquarters for British General Prescott during his occupation of Newport from 1776-1779. |
